A Stylish Destination Wedding in Amsterdam on the Canals

Boat Wedding  ·  Wedding

Kaity and Matt travelled to the Netherlands to celebrate a destination wedding in Amsterdam on the canals, surrounded by more than 30 of their closest family members and friends. Rather than planning a traditional wedding at home, they created a full-day celebration that combined a private canal cruise, a symbolic ceremony aboard Het Wapen van Amsterdam, and an elegant reception on the water. Set against Amsterdam’s historic canals and timeless architecture, every part of the day was designed to give their guests an unforgettable experience while celebrating one of life’s biggest milestones. Their wedding is a beautiful example of how Amsterdam can be the perfect destination not only for elopements, but also for stylish weddings shared with the people you love most. Our wedding planner in Amsterdam coordinated every detail of the celebration.

A Relaxed Morning at Hotel De Witt

Every memorable wedding begins long before the ceremony. Kaity and Matt chose Hotel De Witt in Amsterdam’s city centre for their morning preparations, giving them a calm and comfortable place to spend time with family before the celebrations began. Its central location also made it easy to walk to Brouwersgracht, where they planned their private first look before boarding the boat. With elegant interiors, beautiful natural light, and Amsterdam’s historic canals just minutes away, the hotel offered the perfect start to a relaxed and beautifully planned wedding day.

Exploring Amsterdam Before the Ceremony

Before meeting their guests, Kaity and Matt stepped aboard a classic Amsterdam salon boat for a private cruise through the city’s historic canals. Planning their portraits before the ceremony gave them time to slow down, enjoy each other’s company, and create a relaxed timeline for the rest of the day. Cruising along Singel, passing the elegant canal houses of Reguliersgracht, and sailing beneath the famous Skinny Bridge across the Amstel River, they experienced some of Amsterdam’s most iconic views together before arriving at Het Wapen van Amsterdam, where their symbolic ceremony and evening celebration would take place.

A Beautiful Ceremony Aboard Het Wapen van Amsterdam

After exploring the city together, Kaity and Matt arrived at the historic wedding boat Het Wapen van Amsterdam, where family and friends were already waiting to celebrate with them. One of the reasons they chose this historic venue was the opportunity to keep more than 30 guests together throughout the day, from the symbolic ceremony to dinner and the evening celebration. As everyone stepped aboard, the atmosphere felt warm, relaxed, and unmistakably Amsterdam, showing that a wedding on the canals can be just as comfortable for larger celebrations as it is for intimate gatherings.

As Kaity and Matt stood together surrounded by family and friends, the ceremony became much more than exchanging rings. Choosing a symbolic ceremony gave them the freedom to share personal vows that reflected their relationship, filling the room with laughter, emotion, and happy tears. With everyone gathered close by, every word became part of a moment their guests would remember long after the wedding day.

As the ceremony drew to a close, Kaity and Matt included a traditional handfasting ritual, adding another personal layer to the promises they had shared. Moments later, they were welcomed with cheers, colourful ribbons, and the excitement of beginning the next chapter surrounded by the people they love.

A Joyful Celebration with Family and Friends

As the ceremony gave way to celebration, the boat quickly filled with laughter, congratulations, and joyful conversations as family and friends gathered around Kaity and Matt. Flower petals, a beautifully designed wedding cake from a local Amsterdam baker, and a lively round of the Wedding Shoe Game created a relaxed atmosphere where everyone could simply enjoy being together. Between drinks on deck and a short stop at NDSM Wharf before dinner at Restaurant Van de Werf, the celebration unfolded at an easy pace, showing how a wedding on Amsterdam’s canals becomes much more than a ceremony. It becomes a shared experience that guests remember long after the day is over.

An Elegant Wedding Dinner on Amsterdam's Canals

As evening settled over Amsterdam, everyone gathered around beautifully styled tables to enjoy dinner together, marking the start of a more relaxed and intimate part of the celebration. Elegant floral arrangements, personalised guest gifts, and illuminated LED letters added thoughtful touches that reflected Kaity and Matt’s vision for the day. Between heartfelt speeches, emotional toasts, and laughter shared across the tables, the warm glow of the setting sun streamed through the boat’s windows, creating an unforgettable atmosphere that brought the celebration to a perfect close.

A Perfect Ending to an Unforgettable Day

As the evening drew to a close, the celebration continued with one last round of photographs, laughter around the photobooth, Instax snapshots, and plenty of dancing as family and friends enjoyed the final hours together. Before saying goodbye, Kaity and Matt stepped onto the quiet quay for a few last portraits with Amsterdam glowing around them. Against the lights of the A’DAM Tower, the EYE Filmmuseum, and the waterfront near Amsterdam Central Station, the city provided a beautiful reminder of why they had chosen to celebrate this unforgettable chapter of their lives in one of Europe’s most iconic destinations.

FAQ

What is a destination wedding on the Amsterdam canals?

A destination wedding on the Amsterdam canals combines the charm of Amsterdam’s UNESCO-listed canal belt with a personalised wedding experience. Rather than celebrating at a single venue, many couples include a canal cruise, historic canal houses, waterfront terraces or boutique hotels to create a wedding day that moves through the city.

Why do couples choose the Amsterdam canals for their destination wedding?

The canals offer a uniquely Amsterdam backdrop with historic architecture, picturesque bridges and a relaxed atmosphere. Instead of spending the day in one venue, couples can experience several iconic locations while giving their guests an authentic introduction to Amsterdam.

Can we include a private canal cruise in our destination wedding?

Yes. A private canal cruise can become part of the ceremony, guest transport, a champagne celebration or simply a memorable way to experience the city together. It also creates a relaxed transition between different parts of the wedding day.

Can international couples have a destination wedding on the Amsterdam canals?

Absolutely. Many couples travel to Amsterdam from abroad for their wedding celebration. Some choose a legally recognised ceremony, while others complete the legal paperwork in their home country and enjoy a symbolic ceremony on the canals, offering greater flexibility in locations and timing.

Is a canal wedding suitable for guests?

Yes. Canal weddings are ideal for intimate celebrations with family and friends. Whether guests join a private canal cruise, a waterside ceremony or a canal-side dinner, the experience keeps everyone together while showcasing one of Amsterdam’s most iconic settings.

Can our wedding day include multiple locations around Amsterdam?

One of the biggest advantages of a destination wedding on the Amsterdam canals is the flexibility to experience different parts of the city. Many couples combine a boutique hotel, ceremony location, canal cruise and restaurant reception without spending hours travelling between venues.

What happens if it rains during a canal wedding?

Rain rarely disrupts a wedding on the Amsterdam canals. Many canal boats have elegant covered interiors, while nearby historic venues and restaurants provide comfortable alternatives if the weather changes. A well-planned timeline always includes suitable backup options.

Which parts of Amsterdam are most popular for canal weddings?

Popular locations include the Canal Belt, the Jordaan, the Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes), the Amstel River and canals surrounding the Museum Quarter. Each area offers its own character, from quiet historic waterways to lively waterfront locations.

Can we end the day with dinner overlooking the canals?

Yes. Many couples finish their destination wedding with a private dinner at a canal-side restaurant or historic venue. It’s a relaxed way to continue the celebration while enjoying Amsterdam’s atmosphere after the ceremony.

What makes a destination wedding on the Amsterdam canals different from a traditional wedding venue?

Instead of celebrating in a single location, a canal wedding lets Amsterdam become part of the experience. Travelling through the city by boat or on foot creates a relaxed, immersive celebration that many international couples feel captures the spirit of a destination wedding.
